A peace zone for South America is one of the goals of the proposal that Venezuela is presenting to the meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), to be held today in Quito, Ecuador, said the Venezuelan Ambassador to Colombia Gustavo Márquez.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Nicolás Maduro has announced that in the meeting he will present a peace plan for Colombia to end the internal war in that country, which has affected the whole region.
During an television interview, Márquez ruled out that the Venezuelan initiative could be considered interference in Colombia’s internal affairs. He said that it is reasonable that the Venezuelan government present this proposal to UNASUR. “I think it is convenient, because peace for Colombia is peace for Venezuela and the region,” he said.
“UNASUR is the natural scenario to discuss our problems and make of South America a peace zone, where diplomacy, understanding and mechanisms to generate transparency in relations be the priority,” Márquez said.
The UNASUR meeting is being held by request of Venezuela due to the serious situation caused by the political and diplomatic aggression against this country by the outgoing Colombian government.
